Human races

چکیده

Carl was not a geneticist by training or at heart, and although cognizant of horizontal gene transfer, saw it as a creative force at the beginning of cellular evolution (the ‘progenote’ stage), not as a challenge to defining the ‘true’ relationships between living things now. Most of the phylogenetic community still holds Carl’s belief as foundational. Nor was he, as Mayr complained, a card-carrying taxonomist. So he was free to invent simple intuitive treeing methods that sidestepped the cladist wars already raging at the time he started to present his startling results. Still today at big evolution meetings it is almost as if the rRNA phylogeneticists working on microbes and those who study the evolution of organisms one can see are different tribes, though some now can bridge the gap. Carl was styled by the Science writer Virginia Morell [4] as “microbiology’s scarred revolutionary”, and the heroic story around his struggle has been told many times over, indeed now has engaged a professional historian of science as well as his colleagues. But extraordinary claims rightly demand extraordinary proofs, and Carl did in the fullness of time win many prizes — the Swedish Academy’s Crafoord Prize (the real biologist’s equivalent of the Nobel), a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, the Waksman Award of the US National Academy of Sciences, the National Medal of Science, and the Leeuwenhoek Medal. And he is survived by his army, a legion of researchers owing allegiance not just to his methods but to the intellectual framework he almost singlehandedly imposed on the microbial world. None of us could hope for more.

Against racial medicine

Some scholars claim that recent studies of human genetic variation validate the existence of human biological races and falsify the idea that human races are socially constructed misconceptions. They assert that analyses of DNA polymorphisms unambiguously partition individuals into groups that are very similar to lay conceptions of race. Furthermore, they propose that this partitioning allows u...

Ramp Activity Expert System for Scheduling and Co-ordination at an Airport

ity coordination expert system (RACES) to solve aircraft-parking problems. RACES includes a knowledge-based scheduling system that assigns all daily arriving and departing flights to the gates and remote spots with domain-specific knowledge and heuristics acquired from human experts. RACES processes complex scheduling problems such as dynamic interrelations among the characteristics of remote s...

The Effects of Potassium Bromide on Biochemical Contents of the Fat Body and Haemolymph of Crossbreed Races of the Silkworm, Bombyx mori L.

Oral supplementation with potassium bromide (10, 20 and 40 ?g/ml) to fifth instar larvae of CSR2, CSR4 and CSR2xCSR4 crossbreed races of the silkworm, Bombyx mori resulted in a significant increase in the fat body glycogen in all the treated groups and in all the three races of the silkworm, B. mori. The fat body protein content was increased with 20 and 40 ?g/ml treated groups in CSR2 and CSR4...

تفکیک فاکتورهای بیماری زایی در پنج نژاد پر آزار زنگ زرد گندم (Puccinia striiformis f.sp. tritici) و شناسایی منابع مقاومت نسبت به آنها

Identifying the virulence factors of stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici) disease, awareness of numbers and identification of resistance genes in wheat breeding materials, accelerate the process of producing the resistance cultivars which are sustained against different races. To study the genetic and pathogenic and non-pathogenic spectrum of genes, five hot races of stripe rust wh...

Darwin's explanation of races by means of sexual selection.

In Darwin's Sacred Cause, Adrian Desmond and James Moore contend that "Darwin would put his utmost into sexual selection because the subject intrigued him, no doubt, but also for a deeper reason: the theory vindicated his lifelong commitment to human brotherhood" (2009: p. 360). Without questioning Desmond and Moore's evidence, I will raise some puzzles for their view. I will show that attentio...
